2024 Paris Olympics
The 2024 Paris Olympics will see the debut of two new events: Breaking (Breakdancing) and Kayak Cross. Their inclusion in the Olympics reflects the efforts of International Olympic Committee to appeal younger audience and introduce diverse & exciting sports in the Olympics.
Breaking, commonly known as breakdancing, is a perfect mixture of art and athleticism. Power moves like ‘Windmill’, ‘Airflare’ and ‘Swipe’ need a lot of upper body skills and core strength. The high-intensity craft that requires top-quality body movements to the beats often demands the highest standard of fitness. The breaking competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games comprises two events— one for the men (B-boys) and one for the women (B-girls). In spectacular solo battles, 16 B-boys and 16 B-girls compete in one-on-one duels. During a battle, the two participants take turns in so-called throw downs, each lasting 60 seconds. During this time, the dancers have the opportunity to impress the judges with their breakdancing. Athletes will use a combination of power moves—including windmills, the 6-step, and freezes—as they showcase their style and improvise to the beats of DJ’s tracks to secure the judges’ marks.
Judges give marks based on six criteria: creativity, technique, performance skills, versatility, personality and musicality. Creativity, technique & performance skills make up 60 percent of the overall score and other three criteria account for 40 percent. Whosoever achieves the highest score wins and moves on to the next round of the competition and best will take home the Olympic breaking medals.
On August 9, 2024 the breakdance battles will start with the women’s categories, with the qualifying round from 4 to 6 pm and the final from 8 to 10 pm. On the following Saturday, August 10, the men will battle for the coveted title in their qualifying rounds from 4 to 6 pm and dance in the final from 8 to 10 pm. An action-packed weekend awaits the audience in Paris – with impressive moves and thrilling performances.
